Update - November 2019

Comments are being reviewed during the detailed design stage with a view to take a paper to the next Joint Transportation Board on 18 November with final junction design for recommendation to proceed to construction.

The project is now broken down into 3 phases comprising proposals to improve road junctions and improve facilities for pedestrians between New Hythe Lane and Station Road.

Phase 1 is focusing on the New Hythe Lane junction between New Road and Larkfield Road.

Phase 2 will focus on widening footways between New Hythe Lane and Ditton Place.

Phase 3 will focus on improvements between Ditton Place and Station Road which will be constructed at a later stage.

The proposals are to increase the number of straight-ahead lanes at both the New Hythe Lane junction and the Station Road junction to two each way.  The length of the merge lanes will also be increased to give greater capacity at these two junctions and to maintain a good flow of traffic.

As a result of the consultation feedback the proposed shared or segregated footway/cycleway is now not being progressed and instead a wider footway only proposed.

An ineffective bus lane heading west leading to the New Hythe Lane junction will be removed and a number of bus lay-bys removed although the bus stops will remain in place. Vehicles will be able to overtake the buses which will stop on the carriageway as there is sufficient width to allow this albeit over the central hatched areas.

A copy of the Consultation Report is available to read in the Summary of Results section below.

We would like to hear your views on our proposal to make a number of highway improvements on the A20, London Road between New Hythe Lane and Station Road.  These proposed highway alterations will improve safety for cyclists and reduce congestion. The scheme consists of the installation of a shared cycle footpath, existing islands to be upgraded with wider kerbs and tactile paving, the removal of a bus lane, the provision of increased road layout to two lanes, and the relocation of a bus stop.

Your feedback is essential to help us shape our proposal and ensure it best suits the needs of your local community and local businesses.
