What are we doing?

We are installing a new zebra crossing in Northdown Road between the junctions with Northumberland Avenue and Omer Avenue. The works will include the widening of the footway in places, and localised waiting restrictions (double yellow lines) will be installed to keep sightlines and crossing points clear of parked vehicles for safety purposes.

Why do we want to do this work?

The zebra crossing will provide a safer crossing point across Northdown Road for pedestrians, in particular parents and school children walking to the local primary school and people visiting the local shops.

In order to maintain customer car parking in front of the local shops, the bus stop will be moved down the road closer to the site of the Holly Tree public house. A new bus shelter will be provided at the bus stop and a bus stop clearway put in to keep the stop free of parked vehicles.

The footway will be widened in places to encourage lower vehicle speeds and provide a shorter distance for pedestrians to cross the road.

How will we carry out the works and how will it affect you?

The works will be undertaken using lane closures and traffic lights. Access to the local shops and homes will be maintained for the duration of the works. During peak times the traffic lights may be manually controlled to minimise delays.

When will the work start and how long will it take?

The work is programmed start the week commencing 18 March 2019 and will take no more than eight weeks to complete.

Keeping you and our staff safe

We want to complete the works as quickly as we can and without causing you too much inconvenience. Please respect our works’ space and safety by driving carefully through the roadworks. Feedback from our workers shows that too many drivers go to fast through roadworks. Everyone is entitled to a safety workplace and our staff work next to moving traffic and risk injury every day to maintain and improve the highway for everyone.

Please keep this in a safe place so you can refer to it if you need to contact us whilst any works are taking place. If you have a problem during the works or need to contact us in an emergency you can call us on 03000 41 81 81
